The technique makes the portraits look like male versions of heavily retouched Hollywood divas from the 40s and 50s, a treatment normally reserved for portraits of women. Beautiful in a kitchy, Pierre&Gilles-like way, the portraits are quite interesting and well worth a look. The online gallery is a bit quirky in it’s navigation, but more importantly: it gives the artworks plenty of room.

I rate the gallery 4 out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit ZakImages by Fred Pyrczak.

Hottlead by Michael Broderick ****

<dc:subject>Gay Art Blog</dc:subject>

The artwork of MIchael Broderick is caracterized by an extreme beauty of line. Brooks is hard to classify. Charmingly executed pencil drawings, and paintings with a sweet, childlike look belie their dark, twisted content of sexuality, disfiguration and wierdness. Brooks' background as an illustrator of childrens' picture books is evident in the drawings, and this combined with the contrast of the very somber thematic content of the artworks give them a very special, haunting quality. Not all are obviously gay-themed, but an undercurrent of outsiderish gayness runs through it all. It's facinating on the whole, grotesque and funny - and expertly executed. Scott G. Brooks' online portfolio is very well worth a prolonged visit, I rate it 5 out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit Scott G. A fun and charmingly refreshing interface leads the way to four galleries, consisting of nudes, portraits, drawings and something called the "Good Phallus". This last one is very original: mobiles made of coloured or transparent perspex, in the form of be-winged penises floating about under a peaceful cloud. Perhaps not the thing for everyone's drawing room, the artistic contrasting of the "forbidden" motive with the innocence of the object and material makes them interesting pieces of art on their own right - as well as good fun of course. As for the other sections, the drawings is not too good actually, but the nudes and especially the portraits are worth a visit. Mr Hart looks like an artist that has a lot of interesting things coming if he lets him self loose. As it is the gallery is still well worth a look.

I rate the gallery 2 out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit Moxy Hart's online gallery.

Among Gentlemen **

<dc:subject>Gay Art Blog</dc:subject>

As a site dedicated to black&white erotic photos of older, heavyset men, Among Gentlemen does not deliver too much. A total of 17 photos, and most of them rather bland, leaves this reviewer mostly cold. Rather messily presented, the website gives little away of the many interesting artworks the site actually carries. The many paintings, watercolours and drawings in both ink and pencil are presented as rather uninteresting details, that seldom does credit to the whole piece of art. So it all runs down to clicking away on the thumbnail to see if a good - or not so very good at all - artwork turns up. The site is not uninteresting, with original thought in both the artworks and the accompanying text. A better presentation, and a heavier sorting of which artworks to include or not would have helped the gallery enormously.

The most interesting part of the site is the section "Notebooks" - where you actually can flip through the artist's sketchbooks on your own. A good idea, which gives a very special intimacy to seeing the artworks.

I rate the gallery 3 out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit the AfriBoy gallery of African male erotic art.

Peter's Gallery of gay cartoons ****

<dc:subject>Gay Art Blog</dc:subject>

The website of Dutch artist Peter Welleman is a fun and unpretentious collection of his gay comic drawings. In addition to building a flashy but professional looking front-end for the gallery, a clearer sorting of the artworks makes visiting the gallery to a much better experience than earlier. The most interesting work is found in the gallery "Paintings", where poetic watercolours and collages give a sensitive treatment of questions of identity and sexuality. The "Cheesecake" gallery is all kitschy fun, a irreverent pastiche of American commercial painting in an Rockwellian vein. The gallery's heavy use of Flash makes the site rather slow, but it's very well worth a visit and recieves 5 out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit the Paul Richmond Studio.

TrustFido.com - The Art Of Sam Frazier *****

<dc:subject>Gay Art Blog</dc:subject>

The online gallery of the Californian artist Sam Frazier is neatly divided into two large sections: Photo and "Artwork" - which here doesn't at all mean that the photos aren't works of art. Neither section is uninteresting, both have many good artworks. The photos are mainly shot as to look as candid, intimate pictures of close friends or lovers in what mostly looks like their private lives. In the bondage-inspired "Restraint" section of the photos, the surroundings are naturally a bit rougher, but here as well the photos mostly give a feeling more of peace and harmony than of violent restraint. An interesting contrast, and in the other sections the feeling of snapshots of gays having a good time with their loved ones is very marked. All with a nice sense of composition and colour, the photos are well worth a look.

The "artworks" are divided into two sections again, photo collages and other collages. The photo based section is by far the most interesting, with its mystical, dreamlike quality. The incorporated nudes take on a symbolic, often haunting quality in the artworks, making this section possibly the one most worth a prolonged visit.

TrustFido.com has much interesting art from a very prolific artist, and I rate it 5 out of 6 stars.

Mannenknipwerk ***

<dc:subject>Gay Art Blog</dc:subject>

The Mannenknipwerk web gallery is something as unusual as traditional decorative paper cuttings - with a homoerotic twist! Technically accomplished, the delicate cuttings make an interesting contrast between the innocent old-fashioned technique and the controversiality of homoerotic art. The paintings are not his best work, but the photography is mostly excellent, ranging from portraits of drag queens and queer celebrities to traditional nudes and more "arty", and indeed better, seminudes. The gallery is very well worth a visit for its originality of subject matter, and the beauty of some of the pastels.

I rate the gallery four out of six stars.

Click here to visit Jeff Spicer's Flying Wolf Studio.

Matthew Stradling Gallery ****

<dc:subject>Gay Art Blog</dc:subject>

The online gallery of British artist Matthew Stradling is a cornucopia of male nudes, flowers and jewels. Celebrating gay life in an excess of kitchy fun, he makes a painterly nudge to artists such as Pierre&Gilles. The paintings are separated into categories such as Luxury, Stillness, Portraits and Mirror, with an Erotica section to boot. The best paintings are in the Mirror section, which has truly excellent works of art. The other categories are also original and not at all uninteresting, but seems to have a higher proportion of earlier work of lesser, if not slight, technical merit. But even so the whole gallery is well wort a visit, and have plenty of gems.

I rate the gallery 5 out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit Matthew Stradling's online gallery.

Dannyboy Studio ***

<dc:subject>Gay Art Blog</dc:subject>

The gallery of paintings by DannyBoy, aka Danny Babineaux comes across as something rather extraordinary. All of the paintings are dedicated to portraying one gay stereotype, the "daddy" bear. For admirers of this type of men, the paintings will probably be worth a look, as many of them are quite poetic and sensitive. Some of the paintings looks like private portraits of close friends, which adds to their sensitivity of expression. However, the gallery is diminished in value by the brash selling on the website, taking attention from the artworks themselves. One can hardly help feeling that a by a better presentation of the artworks, and a heavier editing of which artworks that is shown, would make the gallery very much more worth a visit. As it is - it's just for the bears.

I rate the gallery three out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit the Dannyboy Studio.

But not necessarily so on Peter Arnold's site "Men Exposed", promoting his photo book of the same name. With an eye for abstraction and geometry, Arnold make the nude models appear as Mappelthorpian idealizations of men. Some of the abstractions are very beautiful indeed, the portrait are all quite good, but the plainer nudes look a bit standardized after a while. Perez’ art ranges from the humorously naive, to figurative paintings and some excellent photography. An adjustment in the site construction has made it harder to navigate than earlier, but all the same it is makes for a very interesting exploration. I like the naive paintings and the photography best, but there’s plenty of other art here to explore as well, including some touching paintings of earlier boyfriends. The site also has a large link index to other pages of gay art, making it a useful starting point for further exploration.

Had the navigation been better I would give it 5 stars, as it is it receives 4 out of 6.

Click here to visit Raphael Perez’ website.

Although the rendering of anatomy has been clearly bettered over the years, Haskins’ constantly has infused his erotic drawings with sensitivity all the way. A very nice (and very large) body of work on the whole, even though the similarity in technique and motif do make the gallery a teeny bit monotone after a longer visit. But absolutely worth a visit, if only for the poetry and sensitivity of his nudes.

I rate it 3 out of 6 stars.

Click here to visit the David W. The elegant rendering make an interesting contrast to the rawness of the acts shown. Some of the drawings are quite beautiful, and all expertly drawn. Hill also exhibit his paintings, but these are of lower quality, and presumably earlier work. On the website you’ll also find a large collection of “Cocky Impressions” - very cocky indeed as they are prints of his friends erect penises, lashed with paint and pressed against paper. Original, and sort of beautiful in their way, but not everyone’s cup of tea, I suppose!
