Mannenknipwerk ***

Gay Art Blog

The Mannenknipwerk web gallery is something as unusual as traditional decorative paper cuttings - with a homoerotic twist! Technically accomplished, the delicate cuttings make an interesting contrast between the innocent old-fashioned technique and the controversiality of homoerotic art. Celebrating the beauty of the form of the male nude, the artworks make the homoerotic content seem idyllic in the vein of greek vase painting. A larger contrast between subject matter and technique would have made the collection even more interesting, but it is well worth a short visit as it is.

The website also has a collection of charming pencil drawings, but it is the paper cuttings that stick in memory.

Mannenknipwerk is quite original, and worth a look. I give it 3 out of 6 stars.

Rinaldo Hopf *****

Gay Art Blog

The online gallery of German artist Rinaldo Hopf is well worth a visit, even though the navigation is rather quirky. The artworks spans over a series of styles including watercolours, photography, installation art and painting, and some still shots from an art film. It's all actually good, and some of it more so. The paintings are not his best work, but the photography is mostly excellent, ranging from portraits of drag queens and queer celebrities to traditional nudes and more "arty", and indeed better, seminudes. What looks like the strongest work of the artist is his installation work, which seems to be very strong and intriguing. This kind of art is not easy to assess from photos, and I´d truly love to see some of them live sometime.

Mr Hopf's website is very well worth a visit, and I give it five out of six possible stars.
